Make flashcards and a quiz from these notes for a first-year biology exam next week. I want about 8 cards and a short graded quiz. Notes: Photosynthesis happens in chloroplasts. The light-dependent reactions occur in the thylakoid membranes and produce ATP and NADPH; oxygen is released as a by-product from splitting water. The Calvin cycle occurs in the stroma and uses ATP and NADPH to fix carbon dioxide into sugars. Chlorophyll absorbs mostly red and blue light and reflects green. Cellular respiration is the reverse in terms of inputs and outputs: it takes glucose and oxygen and produces carbon dioxide, water and ATP, and mostly occurs in mitochondria.
Skill: flashcards-and-quiz

Photosynthesis and Respiration: Flashcards and Quiz

1. Covered and left out

Covered:

  • Where photosynthesis happens.
  • The light-dependent reactions and the Calvin cycle: location, inputs and outputs.
  • Chlorophyll and the light it absorbs.
  • Cellular respiration as the reverse in terms of inputs and outputs.

Left out: Anything your notes don't state. That includes the detailed steps of each stage, the names of the electron carriers, and the stages of respiration other than "mostly in mitochondria". If your exam covers those, paste more material and I'll add cards.

2. Flashcards (8)

# Front Back Source Tag
1 Which organelle is the site of photosynthesis? Chloroplast Sentence 1 location
2 Where in the chloroplast do the light-dependent reactions occur? Thylakoid membranes Sentence 2 location
3 What do the light-dependent reactions produce? ATP and NADPH (plus O₂ as a by-product) Sentence 2 light reactions
4 Where does the oxygen released in photosynthesis come from? The splitting of water Sentence 2 light reactions
5 Where does the Calvin cycle occur, and what does it do? In the stroma. It fixes CO₂ into sugars. Sentence 3 Calvin cycle
6 Cloze: The Calvin cycle uses ____ and ____ to fix carbon dioxide. ATP and NADPH Sentence 3 Calvin cycle
7 Which colours of light does chlorophyll absorb mostly, and which does it reflect? Absorbs red and blue. Reflects green. Sentence 4 pigment
8 Compare the inputs and outputs of cellular respiration. In: glucose and O₂. Out: CO₂, water and ATP. It mostly occurs in mitochondria. Sentence 5 respiration

3. Graded quiz (10 points)

Level 1: Recall (1 point each)

Q1 (multiple choice). The Calvin cycle takes place in the:
A) Thylakoid membranes B) Stroma C) Mitochondria D) Chlorophyll

Answer: B. Source: sentence 3.
Common mistake: choosing A. Both stages happen inside the chloroplast, so the locations get mixed up. Link "light" with "thylakoid membranes" and "cycle" with "stroma".

Q2 (multiple choice). Which pair is produced by the light-dependent reactions?
A) Glucose and O₂ B) CO₂ and water C) ATP and NADPH D) ATP and CO₂

Answer: C. Source: sentence 2.
Common mistake: choosing A. Sugars are made in the Calvin cycle, not in the light reactions.

Q3 (short answer). Name the light colours chlorophyll mostly absorbs.

Answer: Red and blue. Source: sentence 4.
Common mistake: answering "green". Green is the colour that is reflected, which is why leaves look green.

Level 2: Understanding (2 points each)

Q4 (short answer). Why does the Calvin cycle depend on the light-dependent reactions?

Answer: The Calvin cycle uses ATP and NADPH to fix CO₂ into sugars, and the light-dependent reactions are what produce ATP and NADPH. Source: sentences 2–3.
Common mistake: saying the Calvin cycle "uses light directly". The notes say it uses ATP and NADPH.
Scoring: 1 point for each correct link.

Q5 (short answer). In what sense is cellular respiration "the reverse" of photosynthesis? Give one example from the notes.

Answer: The inputs and outputs are swapped. Respiration takes glucose and O₂ and produces CO₂, water and ATP. Photosynthesis fixes CO₂ into sugars and releases O₂. Source: sentences 3 and 5.
Common mistake: thinking the two processes use the same reactions or the same location. The notes only say they are reversed in inputs and outputs.
Scoring: 1 point for the idea, 1 for a correct example.

Level 3: Application (3 points)

Q6 (longer answer). A plant is placed in light but has no water supply. Using only your notes, predict one thing that would be affected in the light-dependent reactions, and explain why.

Answer: The splitting of water would be affected, so less O₂ would be released as a by-product. Source: sentence 2.
Common mistake: saying the Calvin cycle needs water directly. The notes link water to the light reactions. Anything further goes beyond the notes.
Scoring: 1 point for naming the water-splitting step, 1 for the effect on O₂, 1 for a clear explanation.

4. Review schedule

  1. Same day: go through all 8 cards once. Sort them into Know (answered correctly without hesitation) and Again (wrong or slow).
  2. Day 2: review everything, with the Again pile first.
  3. Day 4: review again.
  4. Day 8: review again. Because your exam is next week, treat this as your final full pass.
  5. Optional, after a month: one quick check if you need the material for later courses.

A card moves out of the active pile after you get it right 3 times in a row. A miss sends it back to Again. Attempt the quiz on day 4 without looking at the cards, then mark it using the scoring above.

5. Notes on the material

  • Your notes say respiration is "the reverse" only in terms of inputs and outputs. I haven't implied anything about the reactions being literally the same steps backwards.
  • "Mostly occurs in mitochondria" is hedged in your notes. Check whether your course expects a more precise answer.
  • Q6 stays within the notes. If your exam expects more about the role of water, add that material.

Test run on a short set of biology notes. Cards and answers trace to the notes. Question 6 asks the learner to reason slightly beyond the notes, which the model flagged; decide whether your exam expects that. Nothing was added from outside the material.
